Company Review

Paruyr Shahbazyan
The founder of the website

Big in the Baltics, Estonia-based OlyBet started life online in 2010 when the successful Olympic Casino chain decided to take its chain of physical gambling halls into cyberspace. With a history of gaming tables rather than sports betting, OlyBet partnered with Betconstruct, a leading betting provider, to add a sportsbook to the casino and poker site. However, it comes as little surprise that the Olybet website emphasises the casino offering – the landing page is all about casino and poker offers while the sign-up bonuses are available for games of chance rather than students of form and formation.

As part of its effort to compete with more established sports betting operators, OlyBet has looked into sports sponsorship. The flagship partnership is with Zalgiris Kaunas, Lithuania’s most prominent basketball team and a regular competitor in top-level European competitions. OlyBet is also a local betting partner for the NBA, a partnership that works well in Lithuania and Estonia, where basketball is a dominant sport, but might be less of a selling point in hockey-crazy Latvia or Finland. On home soil, OlyBet has also been a title sponsor of Tallinn’s FC Olympic in the Estonian football championship.

OlyBet, like Olympic Casino, is registered and regulated by the Estonian gambling authorities and can be relied upon to meet key EU standards of security and fairness. Olybet also caters for users in English, Finnish and Russian at the olybet.eu domain, with the other Baltic languages handled on their bespoke .ee, .lt and .lv sites.

However, there are concerns for sports bettors, including a limited range of available countries – currently just Finland and the Baltic states are eligible – and accounts that only operate in Euros. Even with a VPN, you’ll likely need a mobile number for the country in question and potentially some form of local ID to go with it. That is likely to rule out OlyBet for most users beyond the Baltic coast.

Layout

To be honest, I found the Olybet sportsbook layout here a bit confusing. Check out the scene on arriving at OlyBet’s sportsbook:

Fancy a bet on the Champions League? You got it, but you’ll need to take a moment to guess which set of odds relates to which game. And the same with La Liga, the Premier League, etc. Sure, hovering on the odds in question will bring up details of who is playing each game but, OlyBet, seriously, is this kind of information something that should be hidden?

You’ll be pleased to learn that the big block of white space in the middle of the screen of the Olybet homepage does have a purpose. When you choose your game, more markets appear here. And, when you choose the bet you’d like to place with OlyBet, the bet slip opens on the right-hand side. It is fairly straightforward. However, OlyBet doesn’t make it too easy to navigate to other markets, especially the more obscure ones. The column of pictograms on the extreme left looks like it will take you to a page devoted to the relevant sport – football, basketball, tennis etc. In reality, though, it opens up a panel where punters are invited to scroll through a selection of leading markets. OlyBet would do well to offer a simple rundown of what games are on now, or starting soon. As it stands, the site only really works if you have identified the event you want to bet on and are willing to seek it out. On the plus side, there is a search facility that can help to steer you straight to the most obscure of games … if you know what they are.

Services

In addition to its sportsbook, OlyBet also offers an online casino service – with live and virtual options – plus poker and the so-called ‘Betgames’, which in essence provide a range of lottery-style wagers.

The Olybet odds are unremarkable. For the Premier League game between Everton and Southampton, OlyBet was offering respectable even money about a home win but came unstuck if the Toffees failed to deliver. The draw, widely available at 3.75 elsewhere, was a stingy 3.59 and a Saints win was just 3.81, among the worst on the market.

Disappointingly, OlyBet doesn’t exactly blaze a trail in those markets where it might expect a lot of local interest. The upcoming KHL playoff game between Jokerit Helsinki and Lokomotiv Yaroslavl had the favourite at a slightly below average 1.49, while the Finns were at 2.62 – competitive but not outstanding. That said, if you want to bet on Zalgiris in the Eurobasket, OlyBet is worth a look. Its early price of 1.53 for an upcoming game against Lyon was ahead of the few UK-based bookies that priced this contest a day in advance. This feels like Olybet is a place for some specialised betting, rather than a competitive player on every available market.

Bonuses

OlyBet’s roots in the casino market are very clear when it comes to bonuses. The various sign-up offers refer entirely to casino and poker play, with nothing specific for sports punters. The casino sign-up promises to double your initial deposit, up to a limit of 100 Euros.

However, there are wagering requirements before you can get your hands on that cash – you’ll need to gamble through 30x the initial deposit plus the bonus funds, and you can only do so on slots. OlyBet poker, meanwhile, offers various inducements, including the potential to release up to $2,000 in bonus funds during your first three months as a member.

Sports bettors are not entirely overlooked. OlyBet has a series of ongoing offers listed at OlyBet ☆ Casino, Betting Bonus | Campaigns. These include double winnings on hockey bets in the NHL and KHL – a clear nod to the hockey-crazy markets in Latvia and Finland. There are familiar acca insurance deals if one leg of a fivefold lets you down, and selected odds boost on certain markets or single-game multis. A more unusual offer promises a free bet with OlyBet for every goal in selected football matches: users should follow the advice emailed to them, place a qualifying bet and hope for a high-scoring encounter. Overall, however, this does not add up to the most compelling bonus offer among sportsbooks.

Customer service

Unlike a lot of online bookmakers, OlyBet does not appear to offer any FAQs. Therefore, if you have questions, you’ll need to contact the site directly. There are two options for this advertised on the site.

Live chat is one of the easy ways to get answers to any queries about OlyBet. Even before signing up, I was able to get a quick response to a couple of simple questions about how the site works and what offers might be available to me as a prospective new member.

The chat window opens in the bottom right corner of the Olybet homepage and will be familiar to anyone who uses Facebook.

OlyBet does not have a telephone helpline. However, there is a direct email ([email protected]) and an option to send a message directly from the website. The latter might be the preferred choice since it can be assumed to evade any spam filters and put your thoughts directly in front of the OlyBet support team.

Registration

The registration process in Olybet appears to be fairly standard, but users outside of the Baltic region will need access to a phone number registered in Finland, Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania to join OlyBet. Without completing the telephone verification, it’s impossible to progress to the final stage of confirming your ID and using your account on the site. At the time of writing, it is unclear whether the ID check will involve any proof of address or residency, or whether a contract with a local mobile provider and a suitable VPN is good enough to get you into the system.

Financial

The first thing to note is that OlyBet will only operate accounts in Euros. This isn’t surprising – the four countries where it operates are all in the Eurozone so there is little need to offer a wider range of currencies. However, the poker tables in Olybet are played in dollars, probably because poker lore is hugely Americanised and throwing your last Euro into the pot just sounds weird.

OlyBet’s minimum stake is usually 0.1 Euros, although some markets have a higher limit. Maximum stakes vary according to the circumstances, but as a rule of thumb, no bet can land more than 12,000 Euros. There is also a daily limit of 35,000 and a weekly cap of 65,000.

The minimum deposit and withdrawal at OlyBet are 5 Euros. Account-holders can fund their play using Visa, Mastercard, Skrill and Trustly. It is also possible to fund accounts in person at Olympic Casino venues.

Security and reliability

As mentioned at the start, OlyBet does not accept accounts from users based in the UK and, at present, its online presence is limited to Finland and the Baltic States. Therefore, anyone trying to access it via a VPN from outside these territories is unlikely to enjoy much protection in the event of a problem.

That said, OlyBet is licensed by the Estonian Tax and Customs Board, as befitting its HQ in Tallinn. It’s fair to assume that this will mean a level of legality, transparency and reliability in keeping with EU standards. Site security is managed by SSL, a reputable name in internet security, which should ease any worries about supplying financial information.

What’s missing?

First and foremost, accessibility. Whatever the strengths and weaknesses of OlyBet’s offer, it’s hard to be a major player across Europe when you are limited to four countries with a relatively small population. Step one, therefore, is for OlyBet to set up licenses that allow it to trade across a larger area.

Next, some kind of welcome bonus for sportsbook users would make a huge difference. OlyBet’s casino and poker offers are attractive, so why not do something similar for sports punters? It seems only fair.

Third, a redesign on the Olybet site would be a step forward. If the desktop version makes it hard to identify the game you want to bet on, it’s hard to imagine what an app might be like.

FAQ

🔗 How can I use my welcome bonus from OlyBet?
OlyBet has a welcome bonus for casino users, but not for sports bettors. To access the casino bonus, simply make a deposit and use the promo code KAS200. This will match your initial deposit up to a limit of 100 Euros. There is a 30x wagering requirement associated with this bonus, and the total bonus is considered to be your initial deposit plus the funds added by the casino. Thus, if you deposit 100 Euros and gain a free 100-Euro bonus, you will need to wager 30×200 Euros (ie 6,000 Euros) before you can withdraw the bonus funds.
🎁 How can I withdraw money from OlyBet?
Funds can be withdrawn using the same methods as deposits: Visa, Mastercard, Skrill and Trustly. Withdrawals to bank cards take 4-5 days, while withdrawals to e-wallets are completed within 24 hours.
✏️ Is OlyBet legal?
OlyBet is regulated and licensed in its native Estonia and currently offers online gambling services in Finland and the Baltic States. Therefore, users from outside these territories are not supposed to operate accounts on the site and cannot rely on the same level of protection they would enjoy on a site licensed for use in their own country.
🗺️ How much do you need to deposit with OlyBet?
Minimum deposits at OlyBet are 5 Euros.
