The Set List: Upcoming live music in Milwaukee featuring Lex Allen, Tigernite, Rio Turbo and more!
April 7 through April 21
Weird Al Yankovic
7 p.m. April 9 at The Backroom @ Colectivo; $39.50 to $65.50; etix.com
Weird Al Yankovic will perform original songs rather than parodies as part of his “The Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour.” For these performances, Yankovic abandons his big-production approach and is allowing fans to get up-close and personal for a stripped-down performance. Yankovich’s recent album Mandatory Fun was the first comedy album in history to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart.
Ty Segall featuring Solid Freex and The Bed Band
8 p.m. April 9 at Mad Planet; $25; mad-planet.net
Due to popular demand, this show has been moved from the Cactus Club to Mad Planet. So expect this to be a crowded one. Ty Segall is an American multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter known for his solo career that boasts 10 studio albums alongside various EPs and singles. His latest album, Freedom’s Goblin, was released in January. For the record, Segall chose not to restrict his music, resulting in varied aesthetic and his longest album to date.
The Darkness featuring Diarrhea Planet
7 p.m. April 10 at the Turner Hall Ballroom; $27.50; pabsttheater.org
The Darkness is bringing its “Tour de Prance” to Milwaukee. The band first created waves on the music scene in 2003 with its single “I Believe in a Thing Called Love,” which showcased vocalist Justin Hawkins’ Freddy Mercury-esque pipes. The band’s latest album, Pinewood Smile, was released in October 2017 to critical acclaim, proving The Darkness has still got it, even after some mid-career hiccups.
Rio Turbo featuring DJ Pluto
9 p.m. April 13 at the Cactus Club; $5 suggested donation; cactusclubmilwaukee.com
Milwaukee’s Rio Turbo is taking its brand of dance-pop party music to Japan, but not before celebrating with a hometown show. The evening features a variety of fundraisers set up by the band, including a $5 kissing booth with members of the band, as well as a bake sale with the option of eating off of a band member’s stomach. Drink specials and new Rio Turbo merchandise also will be available.
Lex Allen featuring DJ DRiPSweat and Max Holiday
9 p.m. April 14 at the Cactus Club; $7 or $12 for admission and album; cactusclubmilwaukee.com
Lex Allen is taking over 414 Day and celebrating it with the release of his new album, Sinners & Saints. The neo-soul-pop singer recently was recognized by DJBooth as one of the “10 Phenomenal Queer Hip-Hop Artists You Need To Hear Who Aren’t in Brock Hampton.” Lakefront Brewery and 88Nine Radio Milwaukee are sponsoring the event, and drink specials courtesy of Lakefront Brewery will run all night.
Milwaukee Day Show featuring Tigernite, Midwest Death Rattle and Zed Kenzo
9 p.m. April 14 at Company Brewing; $8 in advance, $12 at the door; companybrewing.com
Milwaukee Record is throwing a Milwaukee Day show featuring local favorites Tigernite, Midwest Death Rattle and Zed Kenzo. Company Brewing has a special beer for the occasion: Milwaukee Day lager. At 4.14 percent ABV, the Helles Lager will be available for $4 a pint all night.
