Serena Williams

Although the younger of the Williams sisters seems to have the luxury of largely playing in the major tournaments, despite the requests and requirements of the WTA, Serena is considered the favourite ahead of the season’s final grand slam, as is the case in just about every tournament she enters – such has been the American’s dominance of the women’s game over the last decade or so.

With this being a home tournament she will have the backing of the crowd behind her. But, even though this is always considered a huge boost, this won’t be an easy tournament as the majority of her rivals have nothing to lose, while the pressure will be on Serena in a big way. In the first round she will play Ekaterina Makarova, who is a force that should not taken lightly. In addition to the Russian, Serena has some very good players, such as Ana Ivanovic, Samantha Stosur, Camila Giorgi, Simona Halep, alongside others in her half of the draw.

Te 35 year-old will need to be at something near her best if she is to pick up a staggering 23rd Grand Slam title. All in all, we’re talking about one of the greatest tennis players of all time here, so she simply cannot be written off.

Simona Halep

The Romanian tennis player is in good shape. She was victorious in both Bucharest and Canada and reached the semi-finals in Cincinnati – this form from Halep seems like an illusion and there is always the feeling that she is about to slow down and go into decline. In the first round she will play against Belgian Kirsten Flipkens. Despite the results of previous meetings, this won’t be an easy match for Halep.

Later on in the tournament she would face Tímea Babos, Elena Vesnina and Carla Suarez Navarro. It is possible that she will have difficulty in facing all of these opponents. In all probability it will take a collection of big performances to make it past such opponents and there a question marks over whether she can raise her game enough.

In any case, the Romanian is unlikely to enter the semi-finals in peak condition and that is without even taking the heat into account.

Angelique Kerber

Behind the mercurial Serena Williams, German player Angelique Kerber is considered one of the main favorites for this tournament and it is not surprising given her seeding. However, Kerber has got one of the nastiest draw possible.

In the first round she will play Polona Hercog who is familiar with Kerber’s methods and could easily cause problems for the German. If making it through, in the third round she will play either Sara Errani, Elina Svitolina, Shelby Rogers or Petra Kvitova. These are hard opponents to face and such matches could easily take their toll. After playing one of these rivals, if coming through, she would enter the quarter-finals having been involved in some very tough matches.

With this in mind do not think that she will be 100% ready for the decisive battles against some of the top players and thus Kerber is expected to leave the tournament before the final stages.

Garbiñe Muguruza

The Spanish tennis player has taken the world of women’s tennis by storm. She has been incredibly consistent over the last two years and has produced some excellent results, most notably taking the French Open crown at Roland Garros.

Many people were quick to say that this is not surprising, given that she is from Spain. However, she beat Serena Williams, so she simply cannot be ignored here.

Given her form and the fact that she certainly should have more to offer, it would be no surprise if she was to go far once again. She is always consistent and in terms of physicality she is excellent with her ratio of height and weight and is more than capable of grafting when required.

In the form she is in it would be no surprise at all if she was to reach the latter stages of the tournament and a place in the final is certainly not beyond the realms of possibility.

Verdict

It is worth going with two separate bets ahead of this tournament. Firstly, at odds of 7/5 Serena Williams is certainly worth taking. The American is fresh from winning gold at the Olympics and is likely to be determined to continue the good form by claiming her seventh US Open title.

Secondly, at odds of 10/1, Garbiñe Muguruza looks hugely overpriced. The Spaniard has enjoyed a good season and has looked on the upward curve. She has an easier draw than some of the so called ‘bigger names’ and it is fancied that she can go very well here indeed. If Serena is to slip up then Muguruza is fancied to pick up the pieces and claim the title at very nice odds of 10/1.
