The final Grand Slam of the season will go ahead without Roger Federer but does include Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard performed well at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, reaching the semi-final in the singles and winning the gold medal in  the doubles with Marc Lopez. However, he has got a nasty draw and the Spaniard isn’t exactly expected to win here. We revisit the beaten track when considering the chances of the winner of the US Open. The main four are considered to be Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Milos Raonic and Juan Martin Del Potro.

Novak Djokovic

Djokovic has arrived in New York in what is arguably his worst condition in recent years. The Serbian has missed a lot of tennis through injury this season and now, for the first time in a long time, he has something to prove.

Perhaps he will be feeling more relaxed following a long-awaited victory at Roland Garros. His defeat by Sam Querrey in the third round of Wimbledon was certainly a surprise and he did not look great at the tournament in Toronto, despite his victory and then it all ended in tears at the Olympics where he lost to Juan Martin Del Potro in the first round.

One major positive is the fact that Djokovic has quite an easy draw and will face Jiri Yanovich in the first round who is not in great shape and has only won two matches this year.

In the fourth round he is likely to meet either John Isner or Richard Gasquet which is another pretty routine barrier for Djokovic to overcome. The American may delay the Serb but Djokovic should have more than enough to come through the tie. Frenchman Gasquet, in turn, is poor against players with good defence and the same can be said of Tsonga and Marin Cilic along with Kevin Anderson. Those three players could face Djokovic in the quarter-finals.

Milos Raonic

The Canadian is seeded fifth here and could face a number of tough opponents if making it to the quarter-finals. These include Gael Monfils, Marcos Baghdatis, and, of course, Rafa Nadal, who is seeded at number four.

The odds on a Raonic victory are 12/1 – a figure that, on the face of it, looks too high. Raonic has quite a good chance of making the semi-finals if Rafa Nadal gets knocked out early, who incidentally has a good draw. Whoever makes the semis from either Nadal or Raonic will face Novak Djokovic in a rather frazzled state, which of course will benefit the Serb.

Andy Murray

Right now, tennis should be paying tribute to the Brit. While everyone is talking about the trauma and suffering of Federer and Nadal along with Djokovic’s instability as well as admiring the return of Juan Martin Del Potro, Murray is quietly writing his name into the history books.

Murray has not only played in all of the Grand Slam finals this season, he won Wimbledon for the second time in a row and held onto his Olympic crown. The Brit arrives in New York as the second favourite, although, given his form, it could easily argued that he should be favourite.

In the likes of Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori, there are no opponents that Murray will struggle too much with, especially given the confidence he has right now. He has won the last two major tournaments and could very easily continue this good form by winning the US Open.

Juan Martin Del Potro

According to William Hill, the Argentinian is fourth in the list of favorites. The odds on his victory are 14/1. However, this is nothing to do with Del Potro’s form, but more the fact that he has a simple draw. There are no major threats before the quarter-finals and it would be fair to say he should quite easily make the semi-finals given the fact he will probably play Stan Wawrinka in the quarters.

Having said this, you could easily get the impression that Del Potro is still capable of losing to anyone and is perhaps the most unpredictable player at the tournament. His chances of winning the US Open are pretty low, even if he makes the semi-finals he is likely to face Andy Murray – a player who defeated him at the Olympics and would likely do so again.

The Argentine has the ability to become more of a force next year and we can expect him to be playing at the highest level if he avoids injury.

Verdict

The realities of this season are that the big tournaments are divided between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. Previously, in order to choose the winner, it was necessary to proceed with caution. However, given Djokovic’s current circumstances and his dipping form, Murray can be selected with more confidence than ever.

The tournament favourites is in very good shape right now and comes into this tournament playing better than anyone. His confidence will be high and it looks for all to see that this is a huge opportunity for the Brit to pick up another Grand Slam title. At odds of 7/4, Murray is well worth backing here.
