Petr Yan vs Sean O'MalleyBookmaker Ratings: Prediction #1 –

Fight Result – Peter Yan to win

I don’t think O’Malley will beat Yan, but he certainly won’t be an easy walk for the Russian. And it’s not about class, it’s about style. As tough as Peter is on offense, it’s never easy to find the keys to a tall, agile striker. Sean may not be as talented as Sandhagen, but he’s got more punching power. Given that the former champion is slow to start his fights, the underdog has a chance to take the first round. However, once Ian picks up the pace, we’ll see the real difference in levels. I’ll take Petr’s eventual victory, he’ll win either 29-28 or by TKO in the third round.

Preliminary review and match prediction for Petr Yan vs Sean O’Malley

Petr Yan: No Mercy

Petr is the number one ranked contender and the former UFC champion in the up to 61.2 kg weight class. He has a wide arsenal of skills, which helps him to cope in all situations. The current year is not going well for the Russian. In April he had his long-awaited rematch with Aljamain Sterling, but could not take the title from him. The judges considered that the American took 3 out of 5 rounds. Initially, Yan did not want to accept the defeat, but eventually accepted the failure and decided to agree to a fight with an opponent who was twelve positions below him in the rankings.

In the UFC he has beaten Jose Aldo, Cory Sandhagen, Jimmie Rivera, John Dodson, Jiraiya Faber, Douglas Silva de Andrade. The Russian has enough experience to fight opponents of different styles and sizes. But Sandhagen’s fight shows that it’s not easy for Petr to adjust to tall and long handed kickers like Sean O’Malley. I don’t exclude that the former champion will try to mix punching technique with wrestling. The Ekaterinburger is obviously stronger in parterre than the American, although he is a basic boxer. A big problem for the underdog could be Yan’s kicks, as well as his unexpected Muay Thai elbows and knees. O’Malley is uncomfortable when pressured and deprived of punching distance.

Sean O’Malley:  Sugar

Sean has never fought opponents of this class. Both of his fights with ranked opponents ended poorly, so many are skeptical about the steep rise in opposition. Technically, the American has 15 wins in 16 fights, but he lost his last fight against Pedro Munhoz. However, because of a poke in the eye by Sean, the fight was stopped and ruled a stoppage. It’s not certain that O’Malley would have beaten the Brazilian, given his passive fighting style. Add to that an early loss to Marlon Vera. It turns out that Sugar hasn’t beaten a high-class opponent yet. At the very least, that’s where he opened up as a 4-1 underdog. But stylistically, Sean is uncomfortable for any opponent, including Yan. He has fast and long straight punches, good uppercuts, deceives with feints and sets traps.

O’Malley can definitely compete with Yan in kickboxing distance, but he has nothing to compete with the former champion in clinch and wrestling. I think Sean’s tactics are going to be sharpened to beat the Russian by a close decision. The American has nothing to lose if he loses to Petr, because there is a huge difference in their rating and experience between them. But if he fights competitively or wins, O’Malley will be able to step up his quotations and get closer to a title fight.
