BetVictor UK - Overview & Rating
Pros and cons
Characteristics of the Bookmaker – short
BetVictor operates only in English. The website has additional language versions: English International, English (Canada) and English (Ireland).
BetVictor is one of the longest established firms in the marketplace, dating back to 1946 when gambling in the UK was legalised. BetVictor started out offering books on greyhound races at London’s Walthamstow Stadium, owned by the founder, William Chandler. After his death, the company was passed to his son, Victor, hence the name.
Back then, of course, there was no online betting – the company leapt into the digital age in 1999 when it launched its betting website. By 2015, it had abandoned betting shops altogether and was trading under a streamlined new name, BetVictor. Immediately prior to that, BetVictor shifted its entire operation to Gibraltar in a bid to limit its tax liabilities. In the UK, BetVictor is licensed by the Gambling Commission of Great Britain; in Ireland, BetVictor is licensed by the Revenue Commissioners. In all other jurisdictions, it is licensed by the Government of Gibraltar and regulated by the Gibraltar Gambling Commissioner.
BetVictor’s long history makes it unique, while its reputation as one of the first bookmakers to go online means BetVictor is an established and reliable partner for any discerning punter. And, with the betvictor.com brand available in more than 160 countries worldwide, there are few places where you can’t get online and place your bets with them.
With a global reach, BetVictor claims to have more than 500,000 active bettors, generating an annual turnover in the region of £1 billion.
Design and layout
With a simple, uncluttered approach, BetVictor has a minimalist look online. Offers and enhanced odds scroll on the top of the page, key in-play markets follow and it’s a short scroll to find upcoming races and other big events. If there’s a weakness, it’s the sidebar menu to the left – instead of offering a list of major sports covered, you get a handful of general categories (sports, in-play, casino etc) and an option to select a pull-out A-Z menu for all the sports on offer. Luckily, once you’ve placed a couple of wagers, you’ll find your preferred games appear under ‘my popular sports’. After that, it’s a single click to give you the day’s markets on football, horse racing, or whatever grabs your interest.
The BetVictor App, available for Android and iOS, offers much the same in a phone-friendly format. BetVictor App is said to be faster than the desktop version and can be downloaded simply by scanning a QR code on the screen.
Like most online betting sites, BetVictor offers more than just traditional sports betting. BetVictor users can dabble in more than 40 sports pre-game and in-play, but there’s also a casino, a live casino and a lottery to keep you busy. A designated Esports section is a relatively new addition. In addition to sport, in BetVictor it’s possible to bet on politics – the U.S. Presidential election and markets about UK party leaders dominate at the time of writing – or entertainment, if you have strong opinions about reality TV or royal babies.
With about 40 different sports available for betting, BetVictor offers odds on most things – from the traditional favourites like the football and the horses (where you’ll most often find enhanced odds and similar bonuses) to more obscure pleasures including bowls or table tennis). And, as distinct from Esports, there are also virtual sports – simulated horse and greyhound races or football and basketball matches between computer-controlled opponent.
Most big events are available for in-play betting in BetVictor – as are a number of more obscure fixtures. For example, on Monday, Oct. 26, as well as in-play action from the Premier League, Serie A, the Bundesliga and La Liga, BetVictor had live betting from Hitchin Town in the eighth tier of English football, plus a couple of games in Brazil’s Serie D.
One thing that BetVictor largely lacks, though, is live streams. Instead, there’s an animation to illustrate the progress of your game, plus stats to help you analyse the performance of the competitors. It’s a mixed blessing – dealing with raw numbers can remove some of the emotion from your bets, but without much context for the stats, it can be hard to get that all-important gut feeling. In fairness, there are some events able to watch live in BetVictor but at the time of writing this review, there was a limit to how much table tennis I wanted to see, even if the stream itself was decent quality.
Bonuses and offers
For new punters BetVictor has a simple welcome offer – bet £5 and collect £30 in free bets. Terms and conditions, as ever, apply. Your £5 bet must be at even money or longer odds, so no lumping on a team with a commanding lead in-play. The £30 is in three tranches – £10 as a single on any sport, £10 as an acca and a further £10 to try in the casino.
Additionally, there are the best odds guarantees for early prices on any UK horse or dog race. Bet on race day in BetVictor between 9 am and the start of the race and don’t worry about odds moving – if the starting price is better than you got on, any payout will be at that price.
There are also occasional offers to look out for: typical BetVictor rewards include free bets if certain surprise results come in (at the time of writing, I’m up for a £2 free bet if Fulham beats West Brom next Monday; over the weekend I was in line for a free £5 bet if Liverpool failed to win against Sheffield United).
Access to customer care is easy enough to find on the BetVictor website – just scroll down that left-hand menu for the ‘Contact us’ box. The BetVictor help centre is a searchable FAQ that can handle a lot of basic queries, but if you need to speak to someone there are a few options – from live chat on the site to social media links.
BetVictor’s on-site live chat is efficient – when I posed a query I was told that I was fifth in the queue and, within 10 minutes, I had an answer. Admittedly, this was a simple request about upcoming bonuses, posted at a time of relatively low traffic, but the system clearly works.
Registration in BetVictor
BetVictor claims to have active users in more than 160 countries, suggesting that it’s likely to be an issue with local legislation if you can’t use the company where you are.
The registration process in BetVictor is usually straightforward and can be done in a couple of minutes. Fill in the usual forms to create an account name and passport, and provide contact and payment details, and you should be ready to make a deposit and go. For a large majority of users, that’s the end of the process thanks to the ‘Know your customer’ scheme of automatic electronic checks on internet users. However, in some cases BetVictor reserves the right to ask for additional ID, including passport, driving license or other proof of address and, potentially, proof of funds. When requested, these additional documents should be provided via email within 72 hours to prevent the account being suspended. Normally, though, you can be up and running in a few minutes.
BetVictor allows you to choose your preferred currency when you open an account. Deposits can be made via your bank card or various online payment systems. Bank transfer is also possible. Some fees and restrictions may apply to certain transactions. At present, deposits in 10 currencies are possible: Australian dollars, Canadian dollars, Euros, NZ dollars, Norwegian krone, Pounds sterling, SA rand, Swedish krone, Swiss francs and US dollars. Once you select a currency for your account, it cannot be changed.
The minimum stake in BetVictor for any bet is 5p (or equivalent) and the maximum payout is up to £500,000. This varies per sport – generally speaking, more obscure events in BetVictor have a lower cap – and also applies to daily payouts across several sports (thus, if you win £300,000 on the horses, and another £300,000 on the football, you’ll only be able to claim £500,000, per the total cap).
With a long history of online betting, BetVictor has established itself as a safe and reliable partner. Where BetVictor has faced controversy in the past, that’s been due to anti-gambling campaigners unhappy about its sponsorship of grassroots football (a partnership that ended in the summer). Indeed, BetVictor stepped in to honour ante-post bets when BetBright ceased operations in March 2019, earning the company some serious brownie points (and, coincidentally, a host of potential new users).
For the end-user, the BetVictor site offers reassurance about its safety. When creating an account, there is advice on how strong your chosen password is, and all new users are required to add a security question (of the ‘mother’s maiden name’ variety) to help filter out imposters seeking to change passwords or login details. BetVictor also says that it uses Secure Server technology and industry-standard encryption to protect financial transactions.
For an all-round sports betting site, BetVictor covers the key bases. A wider range of live streams would be attractive. It’s also a little surprising that after investing in the likes of Michael Owen and Harry Redknapp as brand ambassadors, their tips and contributions are buried in the BetVictor blog rather than placed front and centre on the main site.
