This is a Championship match between two clubs heading in different directions as relegation-threatened Wigan Athletic host play-off-chasing Norwich City.

Wigan had been on a good run of three consecutive wins in all competitions before being beaten 4-0 by Manchester United in the FA Cup and they have now lost their only league game since, putting them down in 23rd and a huge six points from safety.

Goals have been a massive problem for the Lactics so far this season having registered just 24 times in 28 league matches – the worst in the Championship. Their decent defence which has conceded just 33 goals is, unfortunately, not enough to compensate for their awful performance in front of goal.

Warren Joyce’s side’s home form has been woeful all season and they have accumulated just 12 points in 14 games at the DW Stadium. This poor run hardly looks like improving with seven losses in their last eight league matches in Wigan. As mentioned above, it has been the forward line that has been the difficulty for Wigan and they are only just into double figures (10) for league goals scored on home turf.

When Norwich beat Wolves 3-1 a couple of weeks ago, many thought it was simply a stay of execution for under pressure boss Alex Neil. However, Neil’s men have now won their two subsequent matches by an aggregate score of 3-0. This boosts Norwich up to 7th in the table and just three points off the play-offs, making Norwich’s target of the top six looking like it may actually be achieved – something inconceivable under a month ago.

Goals at both ends of the pitch have been the theme for Canaries matches this season with 48 four (third best in the league)  and 40 against – the worst of the top seven teams – along with just eight clean sheets (28% of matches).

Norwich have been atrocious on their travels in the last few months with no league win since 1st October until they beat Cardiff City 1-0 in their last match. It is the defence that has been letting them down away from Carrow Road with 28 conceded and just two clean sheets.

Although the defence has been Norwich’s problem away from home, I doubt this rather pathetic Wigan front-line will be able to pose too much of a threat, especially at the DW Stadium where they have been so poor. Additionally, with the Canaries generally on a great run at the moment, it’s certainly worth backing them to win here at the excellent price of 23/10.
