That was the fourth time in six tussles between the clubs where both sides notched and a similar outcome looks possible on Thursday. The Saints have kept just two clean sheets in their last 16 league matches, while Newcastle have recorded just four shutouts in 26 Premier League games overall in 2021/22. Expect both defences to concede again this week.

Preliminary review and match prediction for Southampton vs Newcastle

Newcastle are one of the Premier League’s most in-form outfits and the Magpies’ 2-1 win over Brighton on Saturday was their fifth win in six matches in the division.

Relegation fears – which lingered just a couple of months ago – have now been almost fully allayed and instead, Newcastle supporters are dreaming of a late push for a top half finish under increasingly popular boss, Eddie Howe.

Having just conquered one team from the south coast, United will train their sights on another on Thursday evening against a Southampton side that Newcastle have enjoyed plenty of success against in recent seasons, before Howe’s arrival.

Indeed, the Magpies have lost just one of their last nine meetings with the Saints since 2016, which seems like an anomalous head-to-head record given the opposing trajectories of the clubs over the last six seasons.

Ralph Hasenhüttl’s Southampton have been enjoying another steady Premier League campaign, though their resolve and confidence would have been softened by last weekend’s 4-0 thumping at the hands of Aston Villa, where former Saint Danny Ings rubbed salt in their wounds with the contest’s final effort.

Newcastle – who are unbeaten in eight league tests overall – look perfectly set up to frustrate a Southampton team that often come up short when tasked with controlling possession in games.

The Saints prefer to play as the counter-punchers, however, they could have more of the ball than they would ordinarily prefer this week.
