Having finished all-square at the John Smith’s Stadium on Sunday lunchtime, this pair are still deadlocked in their battle for promotion, although it is probably Wednesday who will feel the more upbeat about that first leg result. Sunday’s visitors may well have spent most the game on the back foot, but they managed to keep Huddersfield at bay with relative comfort and will feel confident of finishing the job on their own patch.

Although they didn’t offer a great amount going forward in the first leg, Wednesday did a very professional job of giving little away and they’re fancied to build on such solid foundations in this fixture. At the prices, backing the hosts to come out on top at Hillsborough is very much the way to go.

On Sunday, Huddersfield were allowed to make most of the running, but once again showcased a lack of potency in the final third. Given Wednesday’s defensive solidity and their strong home form this season, it’s hard to imagine the visitors making too much headway in this second leg either. After all, playing on the road hasn’t yielded much in the way of attacking success for Huddersfield during this campaign. David Wagner’s men failed to score in 30% of their away matches during the regular season and managed a rather paltry total of just 22 goals on the road. What’s more, they come into this fixture having failed to find the net in each of their last three fixtures.

Hillsborough is where Sheffield Wednesday have been at their best this season and they really ought to fancy their chances of coming out on top in this fixture. Sunday was the third time in which Carlos Carvalhal’s men have managed to shut out Huddersfield this season and, given their opponents apparent lack of firepower, it would be no surprise if this tally was stretched to four here. At the other end, although they didn’t force the issue too much in the first leg, it’s hard not to think that Wednesday will put plenty of pressure on a visiting back-line that kept just two clean sheets in their last ten on the road. In addition, Wednesday have failed to score in just three of their 23 home matches this season. Moreover, at home, Carvalhal’s side finished the regular campaign having recorded, on average, the Championship’s fourth-highest shots per game. They also rank well (8th) in terms of average shots on target at home.

This is likely to be another tight game, one that could easily be settled by just the one goal, but Wednesday, having not conceded a single goal (and scored three) in three matches against Huddersfield this season, just seem to have that little bit more about them and are fancied to secure their place at Wembley with a win.
