The newly named Checkatrade Trophy is something that many people will see as insignificant or even a waste of time and, with the addition of under 23 clubs from the top two divisions, nobody knows quite what to expect from the competition this year. But, having said this, for League Two teams such Notts County and Hartlepool it can be a valuable addition to their season in terms of both financial reward and in the sense that it offers the chance to play at Wembley – something that is very rare for clubs at this level.

Having played in the league just two weeks ago, these two sides know each other well and it’s likely that both were pleased when drawing opposition from the same division in the early stage of this competition. In terms of both possession and shots on goal, the recent match between these two was a close affair with little to split the pair. Having gone 1-0 down early on in the match, Notts County managed to come out on top (1:2).

As far as today’s match goes, there will be some debate around the mentality of either side. It’s true that we don’t quite know how the clubs will approach this match. Will they disregard it? Or will they see this a good opportunity to progress in a cup competition where teams from the fourth tier of English football have a realistic chance of success? for clubs at this level the opportunity to earn extra revenue is rarely spurned and thus it is the second of these two options that is favoured. With this in mind, it’s likely that we’ll see two teams working hard to try and get the win.

From a betting point of view, neither teams makes any great appeal as obvious match winners and the way to play this one is to focus on goals. Both Notts County and Hartlepool have been no strangers to seeing goals go in at both ends this season – a statement that is nicely supported by the recent stats. Both teams have scored in four of the last five (the last four) Notts County matches, while each team has also found the net in four (the last four) of Hartlepool’s last five matches.

At odds of 6/5, ‘Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams To Score’ is the bet to be on in this fixture.

In addition to the ‘Both Teams To Score’ stats above, four of the last five Hartlepool matches have seen three or more goals go in, while there has also been at least three match goals in the last three Notts County games. And the fact that only one of the last five between these two saw a combination of a clean sheet and less than three match goals also bodes well.
