This FA Cup replay is a match between two clubs at opposite ends of League Two. Plymouth Argyle currently top the table whilst Newport County prop up the league bottom in 24th place. The prize is a glamour trip to Premier League high-flyers Liverpool.

Welsh side Newport are really struggling at the foot of the league and are currently four points off survival with recent form indicating that things aren’t likely to improve having suffered four losses on the bounce. This FA Cup tie and the opportunity to travel to Anfield will provide a much-welcomed distraction.

In terms of both attack and defence, The Exiles have not been terrible on either front with their stats rivaling quite a few teams in the division. It has been much more of a luck thing with Graham Westley’s team unable to snatch points from tight games.

Newport have had a bit of a nightmare at their ground of Rodney Parade for a long time with just one league win (against promotion contenders Carlisle United) since 5th March.

The FA Cup has also been difficult for Newport at home with victories only coming against non-league sides at Rodney Parade since their reformation in 1989. This does not bode well for the visit of top of the table Plymouth Argyle.

Plymouth had been on a bad run having lost three consecutive league matches, however, they have recovered in the last couple of weeks and have now won two on the trot which puts them on 44 points and two points clear in 1st position.

Goals have been the main problem for Argyle having found the back of the net just 32 times this season – fewer than the other two sides in the top three. Most of their wins have only come by a one goal margin and they paid the price for this on their losing streak a couple of weeks ago.

However, Derek Adams’ team have been stupendous at the back with just 21 goals conceded in 21 matches – the best record in the top three – whilst they have kept three clean sheets in their last three outings in all competitions

The Pilgrims have a decent record on the road in the league having won eight of their last nine games away from Home Park. However, that record is tainted in the FA Cup with the Green Army winning just one cup match on their travels since January 2007 when they beat Barnet 2-0.

Although both sides will be highly motivated given the rewards on offer, confidence is a huge thing and Plymouth have it in abundance whereas Newport must feel like everything is going against them at the moment. If The Exiles do not start well then they could really drop off and lose their heads.

The Pilgrims win is offered at a very generous 31/20 and is well worth snapping up. I can only assume that the odds are so good because they are away from home in a cup match. However, I still think this is a fairly safe bet given Plymouth’s away record and the current form-book.

As a secondary ‘Over 2.5 Goals’, at 21/20, fits the bill. With the reward of a tie against Liverpool so glamorous, I imagine both of these teams will really go for it on Wednesday night and we could see a few goals. Cup ties can be unpredictable at times, particularly in these circumstances, so this allows flexibility on the result.
