Newcastle to win

Newcastle have improved of late going unbeaten in their last three matches including a 1-0 away win against Leeds United last time out. Both sides have strengthened in the January transfer window, but we believe with Eddie Howe established in the hot seat compared to Frank Lampard making his Everton managerial debut that Newcastle will have a slight advantage here.

Preliminary review and match prediction for Newcastle United vs Everton

Newcastle finds themselves in 19th place but a win over Everton could see the Magpies jump out of the bottom three while dragging the Toffees further into a relegation scrap.

After a run of losses during December which saw Newcastle concede 11 goals while scoring just one against Leicester City, Liverpool and Manchester City, the Magpies have shored things up somewhat, conceding two goals in a three-game unbeaten run since.

It is in defence where Newcastle have strengthened the most with the signing of Kieran Trippier in early January and then the signings of Dan Burn and Matt Targett towards the end of the transfer window.

The latter two may make their debuts in this match alongside marquee midfield signing Bruno Guimaraes as Newcastle look to make their status as the richest club in the world count and start marching away from danger.

Everton also did some good business in the transfer window with the signings of Dele Alli and Donny van de Beek as new boss, Lampard, looks to inject some energy in attack that was seriously lacking under former head coach, Rafa Benitez.

The Toffees have the look of one of those sides who are too good to go down and a change of philosophy and manager may be just what is needed to pull Everton out of danger.

However, a loss against Newcastle will see them get dragged closer to the bottom three as the relegation battle really heats up.

Guimaraes should make his debut as should new defenders Burn and Targett. Chris Wood continues to lead the line with the latest news on Callum Wilson being that Howe doesn’t expect him back until the last few games of the season.

Alli and van de Beek are available for their debuts after being cup tied for the FA Cup over the weekend. Ben Godfrey is out after suffering a hamstring injury in the FA Cup win over Brentford, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a possibility to come back into the team after a knee injury.
