The power of the petrodollar is in full effect in the North East and Newcastle’s excellent 3-1 win over Everton on Tuesday was aided by good performances from three of the club’s January signings.

Kieron Trippier put the icing on the Magpies’ midweek win with a stunning late free kick and the England international could be joined in the starting XI by two more fresh faces in Bruno Guimaraes and Dan Burn.

With a wave of optimism sweeping over the club, Newcastle have gone four games unbeaten in the league and their top-flight status should be secured with time to spare if their upward trajectory continues.

Aston Villa meanwhile, continue to blow hot and cold under Steven Gerrard and though their own major winter acquisition, Philippe Coutinho, continues to dazzle, the team’s defending has regressed.

The Villains problems at the back were evident on Wednesday evening when they relinquished a 3-1 lead to draw 3-3 at home to Leeds, and Villa have now conceded a staggering ten times in their last five matches combined.

With Ezri Konsa – who was sent off late on against Leeds – suspended on Sunday, Villa look even more vulnerable at the back and Newcastle have enough momentum to take advantage.
