These two could only manage a draw in the first leg but, as United have the away goal, they currently hold a tentative advantage.

Jose Mourinho’s side recorded a shock win over his former team and title contenders Chelsea on Sunday which means they stretch their unbeaten run to seven in all competitions. However, this match against Anderlecht is arguably more important in terms of qualifying for the Champions League next season.

Defence has been United’s stronghold this season and they have the second-best defensive record in the Premier League with just 24 conceded in 31 games. Furthermore, they have kept two clean sheets in their last three in all competitions. However, after a few weeks of lacklustre performances in the final third, United have once again found their shooting boots with seven goals in their last four matches. They have also found the back of the net in all but one of their Europa League games this season.

The Red Devils’ win at Old Trafford against Chelsea last time out means they have still not lost at home in any competition since losing to Manchester City in the League Cup back in September. Furthermore, they have won all of their Europa League home ties this campaign, conceding just one goal.

It is looking tight at the top of the Belgian league with Anderlecht still at the summit but only two points clear of Club Brugge in second. Anderlecht will of course be confident given their current form, however, going up against Manchester United at Old Trafford is a different proposition.

Paars-wit are certainly a side who like to get forward, as demonstrated by the fact they have found the back of the net in all but one of their last 13 in all competitions as well as being the highest scorers in the Belgian top flight with 67. Furthermore, they have found the back of the net in all of their Europa League matches during this campaign. Defensively they are also pretty good at the moment with two clean sheets in their last three games.

Rene Weiler’s side have been very good on their travels recently with three straight victories. The aforementioned attack has also been excellent on the road with Anderlecht scoring in 87% of their away matches in the league as well as in 100% of European games this season – including Champions League qualifiers.

Given the home advantage, one that generally means a lot in United’s case, it’s hard not to fancy the home side. However, Anderlecht know they have to score so we may see them come out of their shell a bit, unlike other teams who visit Old Trafford. Much like the reverse fixture, a few goals could be on the cards, but, given United’s general focus on defence, ‘2-3 Total Goals’ looks a good bet.
