These two teams were expected to be challenging around the European spots of the Premier League this season but instead they have both made rather underwhelming starts.

Leicester City continued their dream start to their maiden Champions League campaign as they overcame Portuguese side Porto at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday night. Of course only one man was going to score against Porto and that was former Sporting striker Islam Slimani who continued his fine start to his Foxes’ career.

Inconsistency is Leicester’s main problem in the league with Claudio Ranieri’s side winning one, then losing one before winning again. If you believe in these sorts of patterns continuing, it might be worth nothing that Leicester are due a win via this method.

Southampton endured a pretty poor start to the season under new manager Claude Puel, but have now seemingly got their act together, particularly in defence where they have kept five consecutive clean sheets in all competitions. Their much changed team for the Europa League match against surprise Israeli champions Hapoel Be’er Sheva on Thursday still managed to earn a respectable draw.

The only dampener surrounding the Saints at the moment is the supposed un-saint like behaviour of assistant manager Eric Black who has been accused of corruption in the latest investigations by the Daily Telegraph.

Following his move from Queen’s Park Rangers in January, Charlie Austin has taken a while to find his feet on the south coast but it seems to have finally clicked for him this season. His importance is shown by the fact he was rested for the midweek Europa League match – something unthinkable just a few weeks ago. The former bricklayer has scored four in his last three games and confidence will be high. Going up against a Leicester side who seem to have lost their defensive malice this season, I would certainly look at backing him to score at very favourable odds of 23/10.

Although Southampton are in good form, Leicester have an excellent record against them and have an excellent home record overall (unbeaten in 18 home league matches). The Foxes have beaten Southampton seven times in the Premier League era and have also won their last three home matches against the Saints.

The 5/4 price on a Leicester win is definitely worth a go and the hosts should come out on top here, especially given the confidence they will have after Tuesday’s victory against Porto.
