Prediction for Premier League match – Leeds vs Aston Villa

Bookmaker Ratings prediction one: Leeds Double Chance – 1.53

Bookmaker Ratings prediction two: Over 2.5 Goals – 1.7

Leeds Double Chance

The Jesse Marsch-era started with a narrow defeat at Leicester last weekend, though Leeds deserved far more from the game after a spirited performance. We’re tipping Leeds to go one better at Elland Road on Thursday and with energy from the home crowd to harness, the Yorkshiremen can claim at least a share of the spoils against a Villa side that dropped points in six of their last nine league assignments.

Over 2.5 Goals

Leeds and Aston Villa drew 3-3 in a gripping contest when the teams last met in February and the goals could flow again in Thursday’s rematch. Leeds mustered 18 attempts without success against Leicester, though the same shot total should yield better results against Villa. Five of Leeds’ last six league contests produced over 2.5 goals and we expect this week’s clash to follow suit.

Preliminary review and match prediction for Leeds vs Aston Villa

Leeds lost for the fifth time on the bounce in Jesse Marsch ’s first game at the helm on Saturday, though there were numerous positives to take from an otherwise impressive showing at Leicester.

Despite falling to a 1-0 defeat, Leicester racked up 18 attempts to the Foxes’ seven and only some weak finishing and goalkeeping heroics from Kasper Schmeichel prevented Leeds from taking at least a point at the King Power Stadium.

Marsch was unable to call upon star striker Patrick Bamford at Leicester, though the centre-forward should be fit enough to start against Aston Villa. The 28-year-old has played just six times in the league this term following an injury-ravaged spell and his inclusion this week could make all the difference.

Aston Villa warmed up for their trip to Elland Road by producing one of their finest displays of the campaign so far against Southampton. The Villains slammed four goals past the shellshocked Saints on an afternoon when Danny Ings tormented his old employers.

Villa have now won twice on the spin for only the second time in the Premier League since Steven Gerrard’s appointment, though they could find it tough to complete a hattrick of victories at Leeds’ expense on Thursday.

Elland Road is certain to be buzzing with anticipation as Jesse Marsch sends out his troops for their first home match under his direction. The American is a master motivator and eager to make an immediate impact, he will have his players energised and full of running for the visit of the Villa.

The last point won by Leeds in the Premier League came in their 3-3 draw with Aston Villa in the Midlands on February 9th – a game the visitors might have even won had they made the most of their 2.53 xG at Villa Park.

Indeed, that was the second time in three meetings that Leeds put three goals past Villa and with the Elland Road crowd pushing them on, we’re tipping Marsch’s United to make life tough for the Villains again.

With that considered, Leeds are excellent value in the double chance market this week.

Safe Bets

Leeds were desperately unlucky not to find the net at Leicester last time out, but having hit three goals in two of their last three encounters with Aston Villa, United should be able to rediscover their touch in the final third this week.  Leeds have kept just three clean sheets in 27 Premier League fixtures this season however, so backing both teams to score at 1.6 on Thursday looks like a safe approach.

Get Quick Rich

At meaty looking odds of 2.75, braver bettors should consider backing Leeds to win this week. The new manager bounce is a powerful factor in football and Leeds’ record against Aston Villa since 2019 makes for interesting reading. Leeds have lost just one of their last five meetings with the Villains and with a little more fortune, they’d have beaten them at Villa Park last month.

Leeds vs Aston Villa first goalscorer

Daniel James has been playing as an unorthodox striker in recent weeks, though the Welsh international excelled in that position against Aston Villa last month. James scored Leeds’ first and second goals in that 3-3 draws and his pace proved too hot to handle for the Villains’ defence. The 24-year-old could be a thorn in Villa’s side again on Thursday and he can be backed at 9.0 to open the scoring again.

Leeds vs Aston Villa Team News

Kalvin Phillips and Liam Cooper are still sidelined for Leeds, while Tyler Roberts and Diego Llorente are considered doubtful. Patrick Bamford was named on the bench against Leicester and the striker could start for the first time since early December this week.

Marvelous Nakamba is still in the treatment room for Aston Villa, though Lucas Digne and Ezri Konsa should be back in the squad following positive COVID-19 tests last week. Carney Chukwuemeka and Bertrand Traore are both considered doubtful.

Starting Lineups

Leeds: Meslier – Dallas, Ayling, Strujik, Firpo – Koch, Klich – Raphinha, Rodrigo, James – Bamford

Aston Villa: Martinez – Cash, Chambers, Mings, Young – McGinn, Luiz, Ramsey – Coutino, Ings, Watkins

Highlighted Player

Patrick Bamford

Patrick Bamford was Leeds’ leading marksman last season with 17 goals, though the striker just hasn’t been fit enough, for long enough this term. The 28-year-old has had numerous injury issues, though Bamford is now fit enough to be called upon and he will hope that he has left his recent problems behind.
