Irina-Camelia Begu vs Misaki Doi. Anna Chakvetadze’s prediction
Misaki Doi has surprised me a lot here in Rome. She defeated Johanna Konta which was a little bit unexpected, as were her wins against Lucie Safarova and Alize Cornet. I don’t know what she’s been eating for breakfast, but nobody could’ve expected such a breakthrough from her.
Begu is also playing well and it was no coincidence that she defeated Victoria Azarenka. She was really good against Daria Kasatkina till 6:1, 5:0, and even after failing to wrap things up there and then – losing four games on the spin – she was able to collect herself and take the victory.
Moreover, Begu’s game seems to ooze confidence right now, and she is yet to lose a single set this tournament. I can’t see Doi standing against the Romanian, because, after all she simply isn’t at the same level as some of the players Begu has already defeated in this tournament. Another factor is the clay court, something Irina-Camelia relishes and realistically she should be winning this match.
All in all Doi has had a good run so far, but, against a better player, she is likely to be sent home today. Begu can do it well in this one and the bet to be on is under 20.5 games.
