England managed to recover from a surprising defeat in the first test at Lord’s to emphatically beat Pakistan at Old Trafford in the second. The third test is being held at Edgbaston, although it was not granted test status for a few years while undergoing reconstruction, it is known that the Birmingham venue is a favourite for the England cricket team.

As mentioned on my previous test match tips, you can find good value in a lot of markets in cricket betting – especially test matches. One of the best things about betting on cricket is that you can choose more than one bet from each market as they often do not conflict.

Most are backing another England win after a superb display in Manchester but unfortunately this is a little too obvious and is really the only bet that doesn’t offer a decent return.

With this in mind it is necessary to look at other markets. Firstly I would be looking at top England batsman. Captain Alistair Cook was in good form in the last test making a well deserved 105, however, how can you not back Joe Root at the moment? He made an outstanding 254 in the first innings at Old Trafford whilst also making a stand of 71 not out in the second and people are now rightly calling him ‘the best batsman in the world’.

Joe Root to be England’s best batsman is 5/2 and is well worth snapping up.

My next tip again involves batting but also references the earlier point made about making non-conflicting bets on the same market. The first one of Joe Root to make a 50 in any innings at 5/4 (William Hill) is pretty much a banker, although there are other worthy candidates for this bet too. Alistair Cook, who’s in good form right now, at 6/4 (William Hill) and Jonny Bairstow at 9/4 (William Hill).

England’s wicket-keeper Bairstow is somebody I have tipped to do well in the last two matches and whilst it may seem a bit boring, the Yorkshireman has so far not let me down so punters would be wise to back him again.

Again, maybe a tad boring, but i’ll be backing Joe Root to make another 100 at 7/2 (William Hill) whilst Alistair Cook is also not a bad shout at 4/1 (William Hill). These two will be high on confidence and playing at Edgbaston will only help them in this regard.

I had backed James Anderson to be top bowler at Old Trafford but perhaps his recent injury put paid to that bet. Chris Woakes on the other hand seems to be in the form of his life with the ball. He managed to get his name on the honours board at Lord’s with his 11 wickets despite England losing that match whilst he was once again on fire at Old Trafford with 7 wickets. Again finishing as the team’s top bowler.

Local lad Woakes will be playing at his home ground at Edgbaston so will be used to the pitch and thus should know which areas to hit. Add to that the fact he is brimming with confidence right now and Woakes really does look to have a massive chance of, once again, finishing as England’s top bowler.

You may be wondering why I have not given any tips on Pakistan. Their contrasting performances at Lord’s and Old Trafford makes them far too unpredictable to be placing any sort of reliable bets on so I would not be touching them with a barge pole right now!
