Croatia v Portugal: Bradley Gibbs’s betting tip
These two teams made it through to the knockout rounds in somewhat contrasting fashion. Croatia, with two wins and a draw, topped their group and were arguably the most impressive side during the group stages, whereas Portugal, who’re yet to win a game at EURO 2016, limped into the last 16 having finished third in Group F.
As a result of such form the Croats come into the game as the 13/8 favourites and rightly so. There’s no doubt whatsoever that Ante Cacic’s men have been the better of these two sides so far and they look a fair bet to continue their good form by winning this last 16 encounter. However, the bet to go for here is not Croatia to win, although that certainly isn’t a bad shout, but Croatia to score over 1.5 goals at appealing odds of 11/5. Having scored twice in both their second and third groups games, Vatreni have looked one of the best attacking sides in the competition. They play without fear and at a high tempo and with the likes of Modric, Rakitic and Perisic in their ranks they’ve got the tools to unlock any defence.
Portugal, on the other hand, have once against flattered to deceive on the big stage. It was predicted that they would struggle through the groups and they duly did. OK, so, in relation to this bet, they only conceded two or more in one of their three group games (3-3 draw against Hungary) but it’s worth noting that they were in a group where attacking quality was seemingly in short supply, although Hungary certainly surprised a few with their efforts going forward. Having said this, it’s fair to say that the Portuguese are yet to face anyone with any real attacking prowess and up against a side who certainly aren’t lacking in that area they are likely to struggle defensively.
