Chelsea have work to do to ensure they hold on to third spot in the Premier League, though the Blues can strengthen their position with a win at Burnley. Before their Carabao Cup defeat, Chelsea had won six games on the bounce and having claimed maximum points on each of their last four visits to Turf Moor, another positive result is in the offing for the Londoners.

While Chelsea’s results have largely been consistent, the Blues have lacked dynamism in the final third and many of their fixtures have been low-scoring affairs as a consequence. Nine of their last ten assignments in all competitions have produced under 2.5 goals and margins could be fine again when Thomas Tuchel’s charges take on a notoriously defensively dogged Burnley unit.

Preliminary review and match prediction for Burnley vs Chelsea

Chelsea and the controversial movements of Russian owner Roman Abramovich have been making headlines for all the wrong reasons this week, though the Blues will hope that their football does the talking at Turf Moor on Saturday.

Against the backdrop of off-field issues, the Londoners were beaten on spotkicks by Liverpool in Sunday’s Carabao Cup Final at Wembley Stadium, though Chelsea might have landed silverware had they enjoyed a little more fortune in the capital.

With their attention diverted elsewhere (World Club Cup), third-placed Chelsea’s lead over Manchester United has been cut to just three points, though the Blues have three games in hand in which to re-establish a more comfortable buffer.

Thomas Tuchel will see anything other than a victory at Burnley as another major misstep, though the Blues’ record at Turf Moor suggests they are worth favourites ahead of Saturday’s fixture.

Chelsea have won on each of their last four visits to play the Clarets in Lancashire and they haven’t been toppled there at all since 1974.

Burnley were tamed on their own patch on Tuesday evening in a 2-0 reverse to Leicester City, though they had given Man Utd (1-1), Liverpool (0-1) and Tottenham (1-0) scares in their three tests at home preceding their loss to the Foxes.

The Clarets held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge back in November and Sean Dyche’s awkward customers certainly have the tenacity to make life uncomfortable for their most illustrious opponents again this weekend.

Under 2.5 goals has landed in ten of Chelsea’s last 11 matches however, and with Burnley’s knack for keeping the score down also a key factor, expect few goals this weekend.

Chelsea’s problems in the final third have been well documented this season and the Blues have few reliable goal-scorers in their ranks. Indeed, they have notched two or fewer times in 13 of their last 14 matches, the only exception coming in a 5-1 cup rout over non-league Chesterfield. Chelsea should struggle to break down Burnley’s massed ranks on Saturday and you can back the Londoners to hit under 2.5 team goals at 1.36.

Matej Vydra and Johann Gudmundsson are still out injured for Burnley and will miss Saturday’s game. Charlie Taylor, Ashley Westwood and Maxwel Cornet all started against Leicester on Tuesday and all three players are in line to start again this weekend. Captain Ben Mee came off injured against the Foxes and is a doubt, however.

Ben Chilwell is a long-term absentee for Chelsea, though Cesar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen should recover from minor knocks to feature. Reece James and Jorginho will hope to start having been named on the bench against Liverpool in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final.
