This will be the first game of Euro 2016 where two heavyweights of European football come together and fight it out for a head start in qualification from Group E. Many have said this is now Belgium’s chance to prove themselves on the world stage with this golden generation of players whilst the Italians are always a force to be reckoned with.

Belgium have had a few injury problems in defence meaning that usual centre backs Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld could end up playing at full back. Going forward the Red Devils boast one of the best attacking units arguably in world football with a plethora of excellent strikers to choose from who are well supported by an assist-loving midfield – not least Kevin de Bruyne.

Italy are seen as a well drilled and organised team. This of course is somewhat of a cliche, but it is a cliche because it is true. They have one of the best goalkeepers of all time in Gianluigi Buffon and the brutes of Juventus trio Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini at the back.

Personally I find it hard to pick a winner in this match as both teams are capable of having completely contrasting performances. Therefore I have gone with a somewhat surprising last goalscorer at 10/1.

Dries Mertens had a good 2014 World Cup but will generally find himself starting on the bench for Belgium. The Napoli wide-man is perfect for making an impact as a substitute with his pace and direct running and I can see manager Marc Wilmots bringing him on in the second half in order to break down a stubborn Italian defence. Add into this that his pace will frighten Italy’s ageing backline and he is perhaps a more likely goalscorer than you think.
