One of the opening matches of Champions League Group D, arguably the most competitive group in the entire competition, sees Bayern Munich come up against Rostov. There is only one winner on paper but Rostov should not be underestimated.

Carlo Ancelotti’s Bayern will be going into this competition with the aim of winning it and nothing short of that will suffice. Although they have been drawn in a somewhat tricky group, they will be confident of going through to the knockout rounds. Two matches into the Bundesliga season sees Bayern top of the pile having scored eight goals and conceded zero. Add their 5-0 win against Jena in the DFB Cup and you can see why Bayern will once again be a major force both domestically and on the continent this season.

The Germans will be slightly worried by their injuries for their match against Rostov with defender Jerome Boateng and wingers Arjen Robben and Kingsley Coman missing, however, they still have the squad depth to cope with their Russian opponents.

Rostov are the sort of team Bayern Munich executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is not a fan of. Rummenigge has seemingly lent his support to UEFA’s move of having an almost ‘super-league’ style format in the Champions League and thus smaller clubs like Rostov would not feature.

The underdog tag is something that Rostov have thrived on in the last couple of years – showing that they are not to be taken likely with impressive victories over Anderlecht and Ajax to qualify for this year’s group stage. There have been odd goings on at Rostov in recent days with Dmitri Kirichenko being replaced as head coach by Ivan Daniliant and former manager Kurban Berdyev returning to oversee youth football at the club.

Kirichenko will still be the de facto coach at Rostov with Daniliant only being named due to Russian Football Union (RFU) coaching license rules. Kirichenko does not have the required ‘Pro’ licence to take charge of Rostov on a permanent basis and so the club have declared Daniliant as head coach (but only in name) in order to comply with RFU regulations.

Selmashi will play their usual defensive football at the Allianz Arena but it is highly doubtful it will work against the powerhouse that is Bayern Munich. Furthermore they have suffered a difficult summer transfer window and have seen key players such as Bastos and Novosoltsev leave for pastures new.

It is hard to find value in the markets for this match but there are a couple of good deals if you look closely.

All advisable bets are ones that back Bayern in one way or another. The first I would choose is ‘Bayern to win by 3 goals’ at 7/2. Although it is a somewhat limited bet, it stands a good chance of coming off.
