Sunday’s Group B opener at the Confederations Cup see world Champions Germany take on likely whipping boys Australia in Sochi. Given their current standings in the world of International football, it would be no surprise at all to see the Australians on the wrong end of a damning score-line here as it looks for all to see that there’s only winner.

Germany are known far and wide as an international footballing powerhouse and, despite perhaps not taking their strongest squad to Russia, are fancied to prove too hot to handle for Australia on Sunday afternoon. There are two bets that stand out ahead of this fixture and these are ‘Germany to Score Over 2.5 Goals’ and ‘Germany to Score in Both Halves’.

As touched on above, there are some glaringly obvious omissions from Joachim Löw’s squad – Thomas Müller, Manuel Neuer, Sami Khedira and Mesut Özil have all be left out – but, with the likes of Julian Draxler, Jonas Hector, Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka and Julian Brandt, this is still a vastly talented bunch, one that is more than capable of laying down a serious challenge. Against an Australian side who’ve been conceding a lot of goals, this German squad, that contains a number of regular Bundesliga goal-scorers, could very easily fill their boots.

Although admittedly not the toughest challenges, having recently beaten both Azerbaijan and San Marino 4-1 and 7-0 respectively, Germany come here in good goal-scoring form and they’re fancied to continue in the same vein. As far as competitive matches go, the Germans are making light work of qualifying for next year’s World Cup as they’ve taken maximum points from six matches so far. What’s more, they’ve scored at least three goals in five of those and have scored a goal in each half in five too.

As for Australia, well, the Socceroos haven;t exactly been enjoying themselves of late, both in friendlies and in qualification for the World Cup. Last time out, they were thrashed 4-0 by a Brazil team that wasn’t exactly at full strength while they’ve also been conceding a number of goals against lesser opposition, including two against both Thailand and Saudi Arabia. Such form doesn’t exactly bode well ahead of a match against the current world champions and you’d have to fear for Australia a bit here.

To put it simply, the Germans are likely to enjoy a majority share in the possession here and should be on the front foot from the off. With a clear gap in quality between the two likely to be evident, Germany are expected to take all three points from this opening fixture and can do so in style.
