The first leg of this match was a surprisingly high scoring affair with a 2-2 draw in Rostov. This of course puts the Belgians in the driving seat with their two away goals.

With no fewer than 33 to their name, Anderlecht have won a record amount of Belgian titles, but have failed to light up the European stage since the mid-to-late eighties when they reached the quarter and semi-finals on a few occasions. They actually failed to win the league last season, losing out to Club Brugge. Anderlecht’s problem was scoring goals, their defence was up there with Brugge in the league but they lacked the sort of firepower that their rivals possessed last season and this is one of the reasons why that 2-2 draw in Rostov was so impressive. Kurban Berdyev’s side are renowned for their defensive shape and knack for sneaking 1-0 wins, especially at home so for René Weiler’s side to go there and get two away goals is nothing short of brilliant.

As previously mentioned, the Belgians are in control of this tie and know that a low scoring win or draw will be enough for them.

Rostov were shock title-challengers in last season’s Russian Premier League as they pushed big guns CSKA Moscow right until the final game. However, in typical Rostov fashion, they have had a turbulent summer. Highly rated coach Kurban Berdyev has been constantly linked with the role of Russian national team manager and to make things worse they have been banned from registering new players due to their financial troubles.

Selmashi have also seen an exodus of key players who were instrumental in their title push last season and have signed only one player throughout the entire summer. That purchase was Sardar Azmoun (who was on loan at Rostov last season) from Rubin Kazan and even that transfer is not simple as his former club still claim to own him.

Although we saw a high-scoring affair in the first leg of this tie, I think this second match will be the opposite as both sides know a 1-0 win will be enough. With this in mind both teams will likely sit back in the first half so the draw at the break is good value at 11/10 (Bet365). As this game is on a knife edge I find it almost impossible to call a winner and the bookies reflect that with Evens on Anderlecht and 33/10 on Rostov.

Berdyev’s side know they must win but that does not mean they will go all out and attack, in fact it means the opposite. As previously mentioned, Rostov are the masters of the 1-0 win so will adopt similarly defensive tactics to try and secure this result whilst Anderlecht also want a low scoring game. Under 1.5 goals (a 1-0 win for either side or 0-0 draw) at 9/4 is another worthwhile bet.
