West Ham Join Race To Acquire Manchester City’s Midfielder
West Ham has reportedly entered the race to secure the services of Kalvin Phillips, adding to the pursuit already initiated by Newcastle United, as per a recent report from Football Insider .
The Manchester City midfielder finds himself out of favor under Pep Guardiola despite joining the club from Leeds United just over a year ago. Guardiola is reportedly concerned about Phillips’ athleticism and speed, hindering his ability to cover ground and prevent counter-attacks.
With the treble-winners preparing for Phillips’ potential exit in January, options include a loan deal or a permanent sale. David Moyes, who had a longstanding interest in Phillips and previously saw a £50 million bid rejected, is once again in the mix. Newcastle is also strongly linked with a January move, aiming to provide cover for the suspended Sandro Tonali following the Italian’s involvement in illegal betting activity while playing for AC Milan.
In his first season at the Etihad, Phillips, holding a contract with four-and-a-half years remaining, has featured in 29 games across all competitions. However, only two of these appearances saw him in the starting lineup for Premier League matches.
