Newcastle has recalled goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, who was on loan at Manchester United for four months.

Dubravka arrived at Old Trafford on deadline day to replace David de Gea, who had lost his No. 1 spot at St. James’ Park to Nick Pope.

The 33-year-old made two appearances for Erik ten Hag’s side, both in Carabao Cup wins over Aston Villa and Burnley, keeping a clean sheet in the latter.

However, he has now returned to his parent club, with United issuing the following statement: ‘We would like to thank Martin for his contribution during his time with our club, and wish him all the best for the future.’

His recall may not come as a surprise given that it was reported in December that United would not sign the keeper on a permanent basis, while Newcastle is keen to sell him permanently and may seek new offers in January.

Dubravka joined the Magpies from Sparta Prague in 2018 and quickly became a fan favorite, keeping 37 clean sheets in 130 appearances for a team that was always battling relegation until recently.

The Slovakian international won the Newcastle Player of the Year award in 2020, but suffered from injuries and inconsistent form last season, prompting Eddie Howe to sign Pope, a move that has so far proven to be very successful.

The England international has kept the most clean sheets in the Premier League this season, nine, to help Howe’s side to third place.

With De Gea’s contract expiring in the summer, Ten Hag was already looking for a new goalkeeper, but that search will now become more urgent with veteran Tom Heaton and youngster Nathan Bishop the only back-up options.

The club has been linked with a number of goalkeepers, including Everton’s Jordan Pickford.

Everton’s Jordan Pickford and Porto’s Diogo Costa have both been linked with a move to Manchester United.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday evening, with United hosting struggling Bournemouth and Newcastle visiting league leaders Arsenal.
