I don’t know about my future or proposals; that’s up to my representative to handle,” the ex-River Plate prodigy also told Argentine media

According to reports, Manchester United and Liverpool are battling to sign Enzo Fernandez from Benfica, but the young Argentine talent isn’t interested in getting caught up in transfer rumors.

Liverpool and Manchester United are reportedly vying for the Argentine sensation, who shone at the World Cup and drew the attention of Europe’s top clubs to his prowess on the biggest stage of all. While Liverpool is said to have reached a pre-contract agreement with Fernandez, United is said to have surpassed their long-time Premier League rivals in the race before Christmas.

However, the 21-year-old stated that he is solely focused on his immediate future at current club Benfica. Having just won the just concluded 2022 World Cup in Qatar with Argentina nine days ago whilst also winning the tournament’s young player award,he is already raring to go at club level and cap off a star-making 2022 with another victory.

“I don’t know about my future or proposals; that’s up to my representative to handle,” the ex-River Plate prodigy also told Argentine media.

“I don’t want to go into detail. I’m concentrating on Benfica because we have a game on Friday.”

While Fernandez’s remarks do not rule out a big-money move, they do confirm that he will return to Benfica for the second half of the season with his focus intact. The 37-time Portuguese champions will travel to Braga hoping to extend their eight-point lead at the top of Liga Portugal, with their midfield dynamo impressing so far.

His domestic and Champions League performances have attracted the attention of European heavyweights such as Manchester United and Liverpool. Benfica will face Club Brugge in an enticing round-of-16 clash in March. Meanwhile, Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Newcastle United are said to be huge admirers of the young talent.

Benfica president and Portuguese football icon Rui Costa has also stated that his club is not interested in selling key assets in January, despite star striker Goncalo Ramos being linked with a big-money move.

“We have the sole goal of having a winning season, no player will leave – unless it is due to the clause – which at this moment is fundamental for the squad,” Costa said during the World Cup, as Fernandez and Ramos’ individual stocks soared.

“What I can promise our supporters is what I promised them at the start of the year. This is a sporting project, not a financial one. Fortunately, we are not facing financial difficulties and do not need to sell players.”
