Journalist confirms Jurgen Klopp declined opportunity to manage German National team.
In a recent turn of events, Julian Nagelsmann has been appointed as the head coach of the Germany national football team, a position he will hold until after the conclusion of EURO 2024. However, it’s important to note that Nagelsmann wasn’t the German Football Association’s (DFB) initial choice for the coveted role.
The decision to part ways with former manager Hansi Flick came after a dismal 4-1 home defeat to Japan in a friendly match. This loss marked a low point for the German national team, prompting the DFB to seek a change in leadership.
The first choice to replace Flick was none other than Liverpool’s esteemed manager, Jurgen Klopp. The DFB had set its sights on the charismatic coach, hoping to capitalize on his tactical brilliance and experience. Klopp, a German native, undoubtedly seemed like the perfect fit to lead the national team, especially with the prospect of managing his country in a home European Championship.

However, Klopp’s unwavering commitment to Liverpool FC meant that he could not be swayed by the allure of the national team job. Even the opportunity to guide Germany through a Euros hosted on home soil did not tempt him to leave Anfield.
As a result, Julian Nagelsmann emerged as the chosen candidate for the position, despite being without a coaching role since his departure from Bayern Munich earlier in the year. Nagelsmann’s tactical acumen and fresh approach to coaching presented an attractive option for the DFB.
While Klopp’s destiny as the manager of the German national team remains a strong possibility, he remains resolute in honoring his contractual commitment to Liverpool, which extends until 2026.
