IOC to tackle gambling, match-fixing issues with new code
The Olympic Movement Code on the Prevention of the Manipulation of Competitions prohibits athletes from betting on events they are directly involved in, the sport in which they compete and any event in a multi-sport competition in which the they are involved. It will be effective from the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Competing athletes will also be prohibited from passing on inside information to outside parties and accepting benefits from people seeking this information.
In addition, athletes that fail to provide the IOC with any information regarding match-fixing and those that do not co-operate with the organisations during its investigations, will also face punishment. Penalties for those that do not comply with the regulations range from warnings to lifetime bans from their respective sports.
