Russ Feingold for U.S. Senate

Russ Feingold is a champion of progressive causes and the Wisconsin Gazette endorses him for the U.S. Senate.

A Feingold victory is important for the state and a Democratic win is vital to the balance of power in Washington.

Polls show Hillary Clinton will win the White House, though we don’t take even one vote in that race for granted.

Polls also show the Republican Party will keep its hold on the U.S. House of Representatives, presided over by Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin.

But the majority in the Senate?

Democrats could reclaim the Senate. Some polling places the odds at three to one, but more conservative models put the odds at 50-50.

Washington undoubtedly would remain gridlocked with a Democratic president, Democratic Senate and Republican House, but at least a Supreme Court nominee could be confirmed. So it is crucial that Feingold win the contest against Johnson.

This race is a rematch of their 2010 contest, when Johnson defeated an incumbent Feingold.

In 2010, the Democratic Party suffered massive congressional defeats across the nation in the midterm elections.
Republicans gained six seats in the Senate and 63 seats in the House, as well as took control of 29 out of 50 governorships. Johnson caught some coattails in this Tea Party route and, considered a “political blank slate,” won his first elected position.

Well, Wisconsin, Johnson’s slate is not blank.

He’s aligned with Gov. Scott Walker and the right-wing political action committees that keep Walker in power.

He’s kept his allegiance to Donald Trump, while others in the GOP have refused to endorse the nominee or revoked their endorsements.

He has the dubious distinction of multiple records on Right Wing Watch, the project that tracks ultra-right activities of political figures and political manipulators.

Johnson’s ratings include zeros from Planned Parenthood Action Fund, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin, NARAL Pro-Choice America, Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund, American Library Association, Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, Friends Committee on Human Rights, Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, National Education Association, American Federation of Teachers, Council for a Livable World, League of Conservation Voters, EarthRights International and the Human Rights Campaign.

HRC is the nation’s largest LGBT civil rights group and issued an early endorsement of Feingold’s bid to retake the Senate seat.

“For Wisconsinites who believe in equality for LGBTQ people, the choice in this election couldn’t be more clear. Russ Feingold has dedicated his career to making sure that LGBTQ people are treated equally under the law,” HRC said. “Ron Johnson believes in a world where companies can fire an LGBTQ person because of who they are or whom they love. Long before it was politically popular, Russ Feingold championed LGBTQ equality because it was the right thing to do.”

Another early endorsement for Feingold came from the Wisconsin membership of MoveOn.org, the “Democracy in Action” effort. In fact, Feingold was the first candidate this cycle to win MoveOn members’ support.

Why? “Feingold was one of the most principled progressives in the U.S. Senate, where he served for 18 years. From casting the lone vote against the Patriot Act in 2001, to coming out early and strongly against the Iraq War, to being a leading voice for getting money out of politics, Feingold has been a vocal and tireless advocate for progressive values and the people of Wisconsin.”

WiG endorses Feingold for U.S. Senate and we encourage you to support him at the polls.
