Soccer league ending partnership with Boy Scouts
Major League Soccer’s partnership with the Boy Scouts of America was under contract for just one year. And, according to the league, that contract won’t be extended.
The pro league issued a statement this past week, as the Boy Scouts of America disclosed that a secret committee reviewed and affirmed a ban on gay members and leaders.
“Major League Soccer’s agreement with the Boy Scouts of America expires at the end of the 2012 season and MLS does not intend the renew the agreement for a variety of business reasons,” MLS President Mark Abbott said in a statement to Goal.com.
The soccer-scouts partnership involved cross-promotions and scout nights at games. Also, players visited with scout troops to talk about fitness and leadership.
Major League Soccer supports You Can Play, a campaign to combat homophobia in sports.
Also, this summer the Chicago Fire, an MLS team, announced a partnership with Equality Illinois, the state’s largest LGBT political group.
