On October 30 in New York, at Madison Square Garden Theater the former leader of the lightweight Ukrainian Vasiliy Lomachenko will fight the unbeaten American Jemaine Ortiz. The fight is planned at 04:00 UK time.
Ortiz is a versatile fighter. He’s equally good on the right and left feet. Ortiz also can box both as an aggressive first number and as an opponent. Like Lomachenko, he doesn’t have considerable anthropometry and prefers short-range fighting. Apparently, the left-handed stance is used for positional boxing, in which case he often uses jabs. He combines well, prefers to clamp the opponent near the ropes, he is physically strong and tough. He tries to concentrate and intercept the opponent in the second position which is quite good, but he is too open-minded.
The two-time Olympic champion from Ukraine has been competing professionally since 2013. Already in his second fight, he fought for the WBO featherweight belt against Orlando Salido but lost by a split decision. Three months later, at his second attempt, Lomachenko became the champion – he beat Gary Russell. In 2016, the Ukrainian conquered the second welterweight division – he took the WBO belt from Roman Martinez. Then there were successful defenses against Nicholas Walters and Guillermo Rigondeaux. In 2017, Lomachenko won the fighter of the year award.
In 2018, the Ukrainian knocked out WBC champion Jorge Linares, thus conquering the lightweight division and setting a historical record of 3 divisions in 12 fights. Next was a successful unification with Jose Pedraza (WBO) and victory in the WBC title fight with Luke Campbell. In 2020, against IBF champion Teofimo Lopez, Lomachenko had a chance to become the undisputed champion of the division, but he lost by the decision of the judges. Since then he had two fights – beating Masayoshi Nakatani and Richard Commey.
Ortiz is an American of Dominican and Puerto Rican blood. The fighter comes from amateur boxing. He boasts amateur victories over Richardson Hitchins and Abraham Nova. He has been competing in the professionals since 2016. In 2019 he became WBC Junior World Champion. The following year he won the WBC Silver belt. In 2021, Ortiz faced superlight boxer Joseph Adorno in a pro fight – the fighters entertained with a rousing melee, but no winner was determined, and Jemaine was counted out twice for the knockdown. The American’s most iconic victory came last May, beating former world super featherweight champion Jamel Herring.
