West Ham enjoyed more continental success on Thursday evening when they roared to a comfortable 3-0 at home to Genk in the Europa League, though the Irons’ supporters would do well to temper their excitement ahead of their team’s return to domestic business this weekend.
The Hammers have lost each of the Premier League fixtures they’ve played directly after a midweek continental test and a game against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday could be just as difficult to navigate.
David Moyes has been frustrated by his team’s inconsistency on home soil this term, indeed, West Ham pocketed just one point from the last nine on offer at the London Stadium. Proceedings at that venue have at least provided plenty of excitement and over 2.5 goals has landed in 100% of their league games at home since the summer.
Nuno Espirito Santo made sweeping changes to his team for Tottenham’s trip to play Vitesse in the Europa Conference League on Thursday, though their 1-0 reverse against the Eredivisie side was an embarrassing one nonetheless.
In the Premier League, Spurs have won twice on the bounce, though they showed plenty of defensive vulnerabilities again despite successive victories over Aston Villa (2-1) and Newcastle (3-2).
That frailty at the back, combined with the threatening combo of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min up front, has made Tottenham an enjoyable watch for the most part however, and their last five league tussles averaged a healthy 3.6 goals per 90 minutes.
West Ham and Tottenham’s skirmishes last season were both pulsating contests and their 3-3 draw early in the campaign – where the Irons clawed their way back from three down in the dying embers – was one of the best fixtures of the entire year.
Both the Hammers and Spurs’ fixtures have been particularly goal-laden in recent weeks too and both teams look far more comfortable in attack then they do at the opposite end.
Six of West Ham’s eight league matches in 2021/22 so far have produced over 2.5 goals, while the same bet hit the mark in each of Tottenham’s last five Premier League assignments. The evidence suggests we should expect more of the same on Sunday and a stake in the same market is advised as a result.
Elsewhere, a wager on Harry Kane to get in on the act could also return dividends. Kane scored twice against West Ham last season and he’s notched 11 times against them overall since 2014.
