Andújar certainly had a good career, but his best years are far behind him. He has never performed well on fast surfaces. It is unlikely that he will be able to do so at the end of his career. The 36-year-old is far behind Karatsev in terms of speed, so he shouldn’t be too much of a problem for the favourite. We reckon Aslan can easily overpower Pablo.
Andújar will probably not be able to put up much resistance to Karatsev on a non-core surface. The Russian is stronger in all components. It is likely that the meeting with the Spaniard will not be a long one.
Andujar starts the season outside the top 100. He is currently ranked 121st in the ATP rankings.
Last year, the 36-year-old’s biggest achievement was reaching the third round of the Australian Open.
The Spaniard won two more matches on clay in Rio de Janeiro. This was the only time this season Pablo won more than one round at the ATP level.
Andujar had previously played twice at a tournament in Pune but failed to pick up a single win.
Since 2017, Andujar has lost his opening encounter of the season.
Karatsev was one of the major disappointments of last season. Aslan finished the year outside the top 50, in the 59th position.
Karatsev played in seven tournaments in the autumn, but only managed to get through the first round in two of them.
The situation was almost the same in summer. The exceptions were tournaments in Bostad and Hamburg where he reached the quarter-finals.
Last year, Karatsev did not make it past a single round in Pune, losing straight away to Elias Ymer (2-6, 6-7).
Not long ago, Karatsev resumed his partnership with Belarusian coach Yahor Yatsyk, with whom he achieved incredible results in the 2021 season.
Karatsev has not known defeat in duels against Spanish tennis players since 2018.
