Novak Djokovic vs Matteo Berrettini prediction for Wednesday’s French Open quarter-final clash at Roland Garros in Paris. After a huge scare in the last round, Djokovic faces Berrettini who qualified for this round after Federer withdrew from the tournament. Follow on for our free prediction and betting tips.
After surviving the last round, Novak Djokovic needs to up his game
Djokovic lost the first two sets in tiebreaks against the young Italian Lorenzo Musetti. He came back in the third set and won it 6-1. From then on Musetti had a groin injury and couldn’t continue the match.
Novak was tested seriously in the first two sets and couldn’t cope with the Italian’s clever winners. That will be a concern for his team as he takes on a much stronger player in Berrettini.
The World number one made 35 unforced errors in the first two sets which is a very high number by his standards. One would wonder what could happen if Musetti wasn’t injured.
Novak needs to be more aggressive against Berrettini who relies on his big serve backed by a powerful forehand. Djokovic is looking for his second title at the French Open but needs to play better than his last game.
Matteo Berrettini needs to be at his best
Berrettini didn’t play in the round of 16 as his opponent Roger Federer withdrew from the tournament due to injury. Matteo is another of a young Italian generation of players who have emerged in the last couple of years and are making a great impact on the Tour. The 25-year-old had a good clay season and is looking ahead to a tough second week in Rolan Garros.
After winning the Belgarde 250 Open, Matteo reached the final in Madrid and lost to Zvererv in three sets. He lost just one set in Paris in his opening match against Taro Daniel.
He then cruised through his next matches against Coria and Soonwoo. Berrettini has to have a high percentage of first serves if he wants to trouble Djokovic who is the best returner on Tour.
Key Stats
Novak Djokovic vs Matteo Berrettini Prediction
Djokovic will make sure he isn’t surprised as he was in the first two sets against Musetti. He only played once against Berrettini in 2019 and won in London. Novak must take control early in the match and leave nothing to chance as he did in the last round.
Berrettini has the power to trouble Djokovic but he needs patience and composure. It is a much tougher game than his other matches and must expect the ball to be returned much more often as well.
We think Djokovic has the experience to overcome his opponent although his performance in the first two sets against Musetti might tell Berrettini something if his team can collect the weaknesses the Serb suffered.
