After winning his fourth ATP Tour title in his career in Belgrade ten days ago, Matteo Berrettini got off to a great start in Madrid after beating fellow Italian Fabio Fognini in two sets in the second round of the 2021 Madrid Open. After a bye in the first round, the 24-year-old world number ten didn’t lose his serve against Fognini after winning 85% (33-39) points behind his serve.

Berrettini is on a five-match winning streak, lost two in eight matches one of those losses being a walkover in the Australian open against Zverev due to an injury the Italian suffered. He seems to have brought his winning form from Belgrade to Madrid as he kept his high percentages of winning points behind his first serve from the Belgrade final that was 81%.

This will be Delbonis’s fifth match in the 2021 Madrid Open after the Argentine played in the qualification round and made it to the main draw. That also means that the 30-year-old world number 77 has been on the court for seven hours and 13 minutes compared to his opponents just one hour 21 minutes. 

Delbonis had a good win against Spaniard ATP number 12, Carreno Busta, in three sets in the first round. He followed that by eliminating another local player Albert Ramos-Vinolas who won Estoril last week. Delbonis has grown in confidence in Madrid and the experienced Argentine will be looking to absorb Berrettini’s hard-hitting game.
