Everyone would love to see a Merseyside derby in the final (except City fans, of course). It would be the first since the one in 1989 when Liverpool beat Everton 3-2, thanks to Ian Rush scoring in extra-time.
As for the chances of a repeat are not that high to be fair. Everton have only had one league win since November and despite having a few real talents in the team, it’s unlikely they’ll be up there in European places, let alone top four. But they can be a real threat on their day. Any team would have that spine of Stones–Barkley-Lukaku after all. They certainly had this Cup game in their heads during the past few weeks. Everton didn’t really try too hard v Swansea at home, they couldn’t or didn’t want to deal with the Guidolin’s team pressing. The Blues kept themselves fresh for the Etihad trip and it’ll be easily seen tonight. They’ll have to do without Muhamed Besic and Kevin Mirallas, who are both injured, and that will surely make their attempt to get a ticket to Wembley an even harder task.
Man City have scored exactly 4 goals in four of their last six home games. But they didn’t win either of their two games against Everton this year, losing the first leg 1-2 and then drawing 0-0 at home a week later. They’ll certainly try to break down the Toffees this time – they had 18 shots (7 on target) and 12 corners last time and I think they’ll pick it up where they left off. It could be pretty one-sided.
There’s a good offer at William Hill. They have this “January Enhanced odds” in which there’s “Match to go to extra time” at 4.33 which is pretty attractive.
Remember, it’s not like in European cup competitions. Away goals count only after 90 minutes. So whether it’s 1-0, 2-1 or 3-2 to City, it’ll still be extra-time.
