France haven’t exactly been rushing forward from the starting whistle this summer, they’ve tended to try and find different ways to break down the opponent’s defence. The hosts also haven’t scored a goal before the 57th minute at any points at the these finals even against Romania, Albania, Switzerland and Republic of Ireland. Iceland are very disciplined and their defensive line is solid. All their players give everything on the pitch. They know France will try to get at them so are likely to make things tight and feel their way in. This is why I think that the 1st half should be goalless. It can be taken at 7/4 with William Hill.
And here are two alternative bets. First, I like France to win with a -1 handicap. If they score first it’s likely that they’ll be able to increase their lead on the counter. They have fast players who know how to counter – Griezmann, Payet or Coman. So if they can get that all important first goal it’s highly likely that they’ll be able to add to the tally as Iceland will be required to come out and play.
The second bet is Iceland to qualify, and it’s no so unreal. Iceland are in good form, and French centre-backs are not the best in the world. The Vikings are dangerous from set-pieces, corners and even throw-ins. We’ve all seen it against England and in their group games. If Iceland can get a goal, especially if it’s the first goal, their defence can bring them another sensation here. The odds on Iceland to qualify are about 9/2.
