Ekaterina Makarova is an obvious favourite here. Both girls know each other very well because they played together in doubles for a long time. Both are in a good form, and getting to the 4th round is a nice result for both, but especially for Vesnina. Makarova wasn’t good enough in her first game here, but then she outplayed Petra Kvitova who was considered as one of the favourites for the tournament. Following her impressive victory against Kvitova she easily defeated Barbora Strycova.
I think that Vesnina will be feeling the pressure a bit more than her opponent here because she often loses to Makarova in training sessions. This might not seem important, but it can be enough to give one player the psychological edge. More importantly in the last seven encounters between these two Vesnina has lost each 2:0. A scoreline that she isn’t likely to have seen the last of. Makarova to win in two sets, at odds of 5/4, is the way to go here.
