The Coppa Italia continues on Wednesday evening, when Serie A’s Cagliari will hosts Serie B side Cittadella in the competition’s second round.
Cagliari have been performing poorly in the top tier this season, recording just one victory in 17 matches so far , with seven draws and nine defeats chucked in for good measure. In their last outing they were dismantled 4-0 by Inter, though they enjoyed a productive runout against Pisa in the previous round of the cup, cantering to a 3-1 victory over the lower-leaguers.
Cittadella meanwhile, are currently 7th in Serie B and they haven’t tasted defeat since the beginning of November (four wins and three draws). In the previous round of the Coppa Italia, Citadel managed to beat one of their biggest Serie B rivals – Monza – edging out their opponents 2-1 in a closely contested tussle.
Interestingly, Cagliari and Cittadella have not crossed paths for almost 20 years and their last meeting came way back April 2002. It is difficult to compare the sides’ current levels, however, it’s worth remembering that Cittadella recently reached the final of the play-off tournament, where they just missed out on promotion following a double-legged defeat to Venice.
