Elena Vesnina had a complex opening match, having to play all three sets against Anett Kontaveit. The Estonian played well but in the end Vesnina came out on top.
Her reward for this victory is a second round match against Beck who she comfortably dispatched of at the US Open a few years ago. Since then Beck has improved technically but physically is still very much the same and it appears as though she has not grown stronger in that time. She can run a lot and has a knack of getting to seemingly unreachable balls, however, if her opponent doesn’t make a large number of errors, Beck finds it difficult to win.
Vesnina had a difficult match to warm up in but I think she should beat Beck in two sets here. The Russian attacks a lot and has a good serve and, providing she is not nervous and plays with confidently, then she should have no problems with Beck.
