After a fine win in his opening match over Stefanos Tsitsipas, World number five Andrey Rublev lost to Djokovic. In fact, the Russian played one of his worst matches in recent weeks committing 26 unforced errors. A fine comeback by Ruud leaves him with a chance for the semis
It must be confusing for players when their opponent changes in a fortnight. Such was the case for Casper Ruud when Stefanos Tsitsipas withdrew and he had to prepare for Cameron Norrie. And it showed in the first set as the Norwegian had trouble with Norrie’s left-handed services. To point out, Ruud won just 35% of the returns on Norrie’s first serve and zero on his second.
However, Ruud raised his game in the second set and served much better. Notably, Ruud won 45% of the points on his first serve in the first set and 88% in the next two sets. Surely that was one of the key adjustments that helped Ruud to come back from a set down. Still, the world number eight has a tough match ahead with Rublev, against whom he has always suffered.
