The final fixture of the Football League season sees AFC Wimbledon take on Plymouth Argyle for a place in next year’s League One. It has been a remarkable rise for phoenix club AFC Wimbledon since trialing players at Wimbledon Common for their then amateur football club back in 2002. For Plymouth it has been about trying to get back on the right track as they have dropped down the divisions since being in the Championship as recently as 2010.
Of course everybody would love the dream of another Wimbledon promotion. However, they have not got this far by purely being a fairy tale. They showed their character in the playoff semi-final against Accrington Stanley where they came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 and reach Wembley. Additionally, in Luke Taylor and Adebayo Akinfenwa, they have a strike partnership to frighten any defence.
Argyle manager Derek Adams has already hyped this match saying ‘it’s more than another game.’ His side will be determined to make amends this season after a semi-final loss in last year’s playoff games and it has been so far so good as the Green Army have taken their end of season momentum into the playoff campaign.
I will tip Plymouth to win and both teams to score at 9/2. Plymouth know the disappointment of failing in the playoffs from last year and I am sure this will motivate them to get over the line. Additionally, they have a 100% record at Wembley which should not be overlooked. The reason I am going for both teams to score is that matches involving Plymouth tend to involve goals for both sides whilst the previously mentioned Taylor and Akinfenwa are capable of causing havoc. I just think Plymouth’s experience will see them over the line in the end.
