Arsenal’s Oleksandr Zinchenko has urged Premier League referees to offer greater protection to the Gunners’ talismanic youngster Bukayo Saka, following the London club’s 4-2 comeback win over Aston Villa.

Saka, who scored a stunning half-volley to level the score, endured a difficult afternoon at Villa Park, becoming frustrated after several tough tackles and a clash with Philippe Coutinho.

The England international is one of the league’s top performers, with only Harry Kane and Erling Haaland boasting more goal contributions than his 17 (nine goals and eight assists).

However, Saka is also one of the league’s most fouled players, having been targeted by opponents on 40 occasions in just 23 games this season.

Zinchenko, who spoke after his side’s win over Tottenham Hotspur, voiced his concern for Saka, stating,

“Bukayo is an unbelievable player, all the full-backs from the other teams know he’s so dangerous, so they try to provoke him, tackle him and the referees should know this. We can speak about Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar, and players like this. The referees need to protect this kind of player. Apart from Bukayo, we have other forward players who are so dangerous and the referees need to be careful, they need to look after them of course.”

Zinchenko’s comments come as Arsenal’s pursuit of the Premier League title received a boost, with league leaders Manchester City dropping points against Nottingham Forest.

As the season enters its decisive phase, it remains to be seen whether referees will heed Zinchenko’s call to protect the league’s most talented players.
