Although the Premier League clubs are braced to strengthen their squads in the summer transfer market ahead of the 2023/2024 season, there are at least five players currently at their respective clubs who are viewed as the favourites to win the 2023/2024 Golden Boot Award.

The Premier League has an array of top forwards, who are desperate to finish the season as the 2023/2024 Golden Boot winner or finish among the top goalscorers.

The English top flight is widely touted as one of the best leagues in the world and also, according to many, it’s the most challenging league in the world.

It’s so rare to witness a player score over 30 goals per Premier League season and the winners of the 2021/2022 Golden Boot winners [Mohamed Salah and Son Heung-Min] scored 23 goals each.

The last time a player won the Premier League Golden Boot award with over 30 goals was in the 2017/2018 season when Mohamed Salah finished as the top goalscorer with 32 goals and that was the first time since Cristiano Ronaldo scored 31 goals in 2007/2008 season.

However, it’s somewhat feasible that a player’s chances of winning the 2023/2024 Premier League Golden Boot award are huge when he has scored over 20 goals and below are the top five players we think can meet the minimum requirements.

Top five players to challenge for the 2023/2024 Premier League Golden Boot Award

Darwin Nunez – Liverpool

Nunez sealed a big-money move to Liverpool from Benfica over the summer but his first few games were short of noteworthy moments as he was still getting familiar with his new team-mates at Anfield.

However, after he gradually found his feet at Liverpool, he became one of the regular goalscorers in the Premier League and he’s among the favourites to challenge for the Golden Boot.

Why Darwin Nunez? The former Benfica striker is a proper finisher, Jurgen Klopp said the same last season. While he’s not Liverpool’s designated penalty taker, he’s fond of keeping himself in goalscoring positions and that would boost his chances of scoring goals.

Ivan Toney – Brentford

The Englishman was among the best performers in the first half of last season after scoring 10 goals in the first 14 Premier League matches.

His form linked him with winter moves to Manchester United and Chelsea but he stayed put at Brentford to finish as one of the players with over 20 goals.

Why Ivan Toney? He’s Brentford’s designated penalty taker, and the Bees play to his strength. His shooting accuracy may not be the best, but he gets loads of scoring chances, which increase his goalscoring chances.

Erling Haaland – Manchester City

The former Dortmund forward took the Premier League by storm and impressed loads of football fans after he scored 18 goals in his first 13 league matches.

He’s expected to challenge for the 2023/2024 Golden Boot award and according to different bookmakers, the Norwegian is the favourite to finish at the top.

Why Erling Haaland? The Norway international is not only a goal poacher, but he’s also on of Manchester City’s designated penalty takers, providing more scoring chances.

Harry Kane – Tottenham

Kane is one of the most consistent players who challenge for the Golden Boot award every season. Last season, despite Tottenham’s inconsistent start to the season under Antonio Conte, the England international managed 12 goals in 15 matches.

He’s regarded as one of the best strikers across Europe and it’s no-brainer to include him in the list of players who could score over 20 goals in the Premier League this season.

Why Harry Kane? The 30-year-old forward finished last season with over 20 goals and not only is he Tottenham’s designated penalty taker, but he’s also a goal poacher.

Mohamed Salah – Liverpool

Although Salah struggled in the first half of last season as he managed only six goals in 14 appearances, the Egyptian is expected to challenge his team-mate Darwin Nunez and others for the award.

The 31-year-old forward is one of the best forwards in the country, his stats speak for itself. Although he wasn’t at his best last season, Salah scored over 20 league goals in the previous two seasons and won the award two seasons ago.

Why Mohamed Salah? The former Chelsea and AS Roma winger is Liverpool’s first-choice penalty taker and he effortlessly scores from close or far range.

Top five dark horses for the 2023/2024 Golden Boot award

  2. Marcus Rashford – Manchester United [penalty candidate]
  3. Gabriel Jesus – Arsenal [penalty candidate]
  4. Luis Diaz – Liverpool [penalty candidate]
  5. Son Heung-Min – Tottenham Hotspur [penalty candidate]

Penalty candidate: A player who could take a penalty when the team’s designated penalty wasn’t on the pitch or decided against taking the set piece.
