Southampton have announced the signing of ex-Manchester City and Chelsea stopper Willy Caballero on a short-term contract.

The Saints are in the grip of a crisis in that position with both senior goalkeepers Fraser Forster and Alex McCarthy sidelined with injuries.

Alex McCarthy pulled his hamstring in the Saints’ 1-1 draw with Brighton at the weekend and stayed on the pitch despite his injury with untried youngster Harry Lewis kept on the bench.

Caballero, who turned 40 in September, had been without a club since leaving Chelsea in the summer and the experienced netminder had been training with League One outfit AFC Wimbledon.

The keeper’s contract with Southampton runs until January 5th and Caballero completed his medical on the south coast on Monday.

Caballero will join first-team straight away and he is in line to make his debut against Arsenal at The Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

The tried and tested veteran, who has been capped five times and won 2004 Olympic gold for Argentina, left Chelsea in the summer after making just 38 appearances over four years.
