American tennis player Serena Williams has entered the WTA-1000 tournament in Toronto, Canada. Her name appeared on the entry list published by the organisers.
The tournament will feature 41 tennis players from the world’s top 43 rankings. Only Germany’s Angelique Kerber and Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina, currently pregnant, will miss the event.
Williams and American Sofia Kenin used a protected ranking. Canadian Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 champion, will also appear at the tournament. She was given the wild card.
Four more wild-card winners will be announced at a later date. In addition, eight more tournament entrants will be determined during qualifying.
Williams was a strong performer at Wimbledon. The 40-year-old could not make it past the first hurdle.
