Roland Garros director Amelie Mauresmo has said that Russian and Belarusian tennis players will be welcomed to the tournament in neutral status.
“We have thought a lot about it and I don’t think there is any fair decision. We adhere to the decision of the European sports ministers, who in March suspended the Russian and Belarusian national teams, but not the athletes as individuals if they compete in neutrality,” Mauresmo was quoted as saying by France Inter.
Also, Roland Garros director noted that Russian and Belarusian athletes may be subject to sanctions if they make any political statements.
Earlier, the All England Club Community Sports Ground (AELTC) decided to suspend tennis players from Russia and Belarus from Wimbledon. Russian athletes are also unable to participate in international competitions due to the situation in Ukraine.
