Ghana coach doesn’t think Portugal was given a fair penalty and thought the officiating wasn’t the best.
Ghana head coach Otto Addo has joined many in saying Portugal shouldn’t have been awarded a penalty during their Qatar World Cup opener on Thursday.
After the first half ended in a goalless draw, Portugal got a chance to get the breakthrough halfway through the second half after the referee pointed at the spot for a penalty following a weak challenge between Ronaldo and a Ghana player.
VAR didn’t review the incident for some unknown reason when it was out there for all to see that there was more or less weak contact between both players.
Loads of football fans including former Premier League forward Darren Bent tweeted that it was never a penalty for the Portuguese side.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored from the penalty spot to hand Portugal the 1-0 lead.
It was also agreed among many fans that Rafael Leao’s goal and Portugal’s third goal should have been ruled out for offside but the VAR didn’t intervene as well.
Speaking after the 3-2 defeat to Portugal, Ghana head coach Otto Addo said: “The referee gave a penalty which was not a penalty.
“Everyone saw that. Why? Because it’s Ronaldo or something?” “If somebody scores a goal, congratulations. But this was really a gift. A special gift from the referee.”
