Newcastle United are willing to walk away from a deal for Anthony Gordon unless Everton lower their asking price of £60 million.

Eddie Howe’s side has been confident of beating Chelsea to the England Under-21 international, with the Blues renewing their interest after the Merseyside club turned down bids in the summer.

Gordon is said to be desperate to move to St James’ Park, with personal terms not expected to be a problem.

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle will refuse to overpay for the forward due to Everton’s high demands.

Chelsea were willing to pay £60 million for the player late in the summer transfer window, and Everton expected the Magpies to match that figure. However, club representatives have informed their Everton counterparts that they will not pay that sum.

Gordon was reportedly absent from training at Finch Farm on Tuesday but did not return to the group on Wednesday.

Newcastle is said to be optimistic. Everton will lower their asking price but have other options, including Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech.

However, the Blues may be hesitant to sell to a team that will now be considered a direct rival for Champions League qualification.

Ziyech has been in good form since Morocco’s World Cup campaign, following a disappointing first half of the season.

The 29-year-old assisted Chelsea’s winner against Crystal Palace and then put in a strong performance in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Liverpool.

However, thanks to the club’s record-breaking January spending, Thomas Tuchel now has a plethora of options in the attacking positions.

This month alone, the club has signed Joao Felix on loan from Atletico Madrid, Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk for £88 million, and Noni Madueke from PSV Eindhoven for £30 million.

The Blues have also signed David Datro Fofana and Andrey Santos, as well as Benoit Badiashile on defence.
